The ILA aims to: - bring together all interested in international law worldwide, from legal and mediation practice, the judiciary, academia, business and international, governmental and non-governmental organisations; - foster understanding of international law both generally and, particularly through its scholarship fund, among young persons across the world; - promote greater respect for and adherence to international law.

Write On! AsianSIL Interest Group on International Law in Domestic Courts
Philippine Society of International Law – Philippine Society of International Law
The workshop will be held on the occasion of the Sixth Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law which takes place on August. The Interest Group will organize a half-day workshop on the ways Asian courts invoke, interpret and apply international law. For decades, judiciaries across Asia have turned to international treaties, and customary international law, to resolve disputes between private actors on the one hand, and between individuals and the states on the other. We hope to use this opportunity to spur scholarly reflection on state practice from any Asian jurisdiction. This is by no means an exhaustive list; interested participants are encouraged to reflect on these, and other, topics that would fall within this general category. Interested researchers and practitioners should send a word abstract and a short bio to the convenors of the IG-ILDC: m. The deadline is 23 April

Theme of the Conference Nowadays governments, scholars and civil society in Asia are engaged enthusiastically in the development of international law in the region. The conference will confront the changes that will ensue from these developments in the region, and provide a forum to share perspectives on legal issues from around Asia and from beyond. The Organizers seek to encourage the participation in the Conference of all persons interested in international law all over the world, whether established or junior scholars, academics or practitioners, government officials and NGO officers, by inviting applications for positions as panelists. While international law may have had a murky beginning in Asia — closely intertwined as it has been with the colonial project — there is no question that Asian societies have embraced it, even for purposes distinct and separate from its original impulses. As a platform for cooperation in many areas, it has proven its usefulness, the contentious aspects notwithstanding. Contemporary developments in international relations, shifts in global, regional and national politics, as well as large-scale environmental and economic issues, now compel a reexamination of the foundational roots of international law, especially as these raise civilizational issues. For example, the horrific spectre raised by a new breed of radical terrorists has raised a common issue to humanity and challenges exceptionalist notions of culture-based norms and rights on what it means to be human and to be a rights-bearer.
